Bloating In The Stomach Symptoms

Written By: admin - Dec• 26•11

Stomach bloating causes much more than difficulty buttoning your jeans. It is also incredibly uncomfortable, and can lead to embarrassment as it is often accompanied by gas. While stomach bloat is sometimes caused by something as innocuous as gas, it can also be a symptom of a more severe and potentially life-threatening condition.

Celiac Disease
Stomach bloat is often one of the first noticeable symptoms of celiac disease, an autoimmune disease where the body is unable to correctly process gluten. Other symptoms include bouts of constipation and diarrhea, and over time, the condition can cause fairly severe damage to the small intestine. There is no cure, and the only treatment is to avoid all contact with gluten and foods that contain gluten.

Lactose Intolerance
Like celiac disease, this is a condition where the body cannot process a certain type of food. It's less severe than celiac disease, but can still be pretty uncomfortable, with symptoms that include stomach bloating, gas, diarrhea and sometimes nausea and vomiting. People with this condition should be careful to avoid dairy and other foods with lactose.

Sometimes a bloated stomach is simply because of overeating. When too much food is consumed too rapidly, and digestion slows down in an effort to handle it all. This can cause a great deal of discomfort, as well as other symptoms such as indigestion, heartburn and fatigue. If overeating happens frequently, you may be suffering from an overeating disorder, which can lead to obesity, diabetes and other serious health conditions.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
IBS is a condition that is known as a functional disorder. The bowel shows no sign of disease, but there is no question that this is an uncomfortable condition. Because of the lack of obvious disease, it can be very difficult to treat, which makes it incredibly frustrating. The symptoms are often chalked up to stress or an emotional problem, but evidence suggests that this isn't necessarily so. The symptoms, which including bloating, gas, cramping and nausea can be somewhat controlled through diet, but sometimes they can still interfere with life.

This condition is an inflammation of the pancreas, a small gland that plays an important role in digestion. Sometimes the digestive enzymes attack the pancreas and damage the tissue. Other pancreas problems include gallstones that invade the pancreas and damage due to long-term alcohol abuse. A severe case of pancreatitis can cause pain, bloating, fever, rapid pulse and vomiting. Someone experiencing these symptoms should be seen right away in an emergency room.

Food Poisoning
Food poisoning is usually caused by Salmonella bacteria. It's usually picked up by eating contaminated and undercooked eggs and chicken, although any food can become contaminated if it comes into contact with the bacteria. The bacteria causes a multitude of digestive problems, including bloating, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. It can be very risky when contracted by someone with a compromised immune system, the very young or the elderly or pregnant women.

Sometimes bloating can be a symptom of a very serious condition. Some of these include:

  • Cancer, including colorectal or pancreatic, stomach or ovarian cancers
  • Liver disease caused by long-term alcohol abuse
  • Crohn's disease
  • Appendicitis

If you are experiencing severe bloating and can't pin the cause to something you ate, you should get checked out by a doctor. If your symptoms are causing you severe pain, nausea or vomiting, treat it as an emergency. Stomach bloating should be taken seriously.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can anxiety and stress cause stomach symptoms such as Gas, bloating/fullness etc?
I have been stressed out and anxious over the last few months from worrying about my future, education etc and because of this i have been suffering from a number of symptoms, which include headaches (mainly tension one's), palpatations, chest pain etc, but even more recently (last week or 2) i have been getting a full/bloated feeling in my stomach, sometimes it happens after i eat and then it will disappear 30 mins - an hour later. I went to my doctor and he said it could be IBS, but he wasn't sure because i have been anxious as well, so it's difficult to tell. I would much prefer it to be stress related because i don't want to have IBS as i'm only 22 and won't be able to enjoy life if that happens. Anyway, what do you think?

    • ANSWER:
IBS is strongly associated with stress and I suspect that your doctor is right. The classic prescribed treatment is Colpermin, concentrated peppermint. Does it work? In my view not very well I am afraid! 50% of IBS sufferers do improve with a high fibre diet, bad news the other 50% get worse. This sub group actually do improve on a low fibre diet. Unfortunately this is unhelpful medically, producing other bowel symptoms and increasing bowel cancer risks. Antispasmodics definitely help reduce cramps, but do little else.

The drug I found most useful in practice was amitriptylline, an old tricyclic antidepressant used in very low dose, 10-20 mgs daily. This may work by affecting the smooth muscle off the bowel. Though not within the drug licence there have been many papers over the past 30 years confirming its usefulness.

You might also get some benefit from supportive psychotherapy or CBT.

is stomach bloating a symptom of food poisoning?
my husband started feeling severe stomach cramps 24 hours ago. we think its food poisoning..........hes had slight diarhea, which i thought would be worse by now. the pain is relentless in his stomach........cramping with acid burning. the bloating is pretty severe he looks very pregnant, and no this isn't normal for him............its all bloat is what i mean.

    • ANSWER:
Bloating is such a common GI symptom and the ultimate cause could be most anything.

Doctors believe that bloating is usually the result of an intestinal disorder, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The cause of IBS is unknown, but may involve abnormal movements and contractions of intestinal muscles and increased pain sensitivity in the intestine. These disorders may give a sensation of bloating because of increased sensitivity to gas.

Carbonated Drinks- Fizzy drinks, including soda pop and spritzers, increase bloating because the carbon dioxide trapped in the bubbles creates gas, which slows down stomach emptying.

Water intake: Many women believe that drinking too much water will give them puffy abs, but just the opposite is true. Even though we associate water with being bloated, drinking more water can help to flush sodium out of the body, and that reduces the bloat.

Lactose Intolerance- sometimes your stomach is unable to digest the lactose--or milk sugar--in dairy foods leading to bloating.

Food allergies can cause your stomach to puff out, too. But this is a reaction of the immune system involving the whole body, and usually hives and runny nose are the more prominent symptoms

Any disease that causes intestinal inflammation or obstruction, such as Crohn's disease or colon cancer, may also cause abdominal bloating. In addition, people who have had many operations, adhesions (scar tissue), or internal hernias may experience bloating or pain.

Finally, eating a lot of fatty food can delay stomach emptying and cause bloating and discomfort.

Stomach problems, bloating, gas, burping, and chest tightness?
About 2 months ago I started developing odd symptoms... which would seem to occur after eating my meals (although it could be coincidental but I doubt it). I begain to feel dizzy, nasseu, lightheaded etc. Those symptoms continued off and on and then I began expeirencing chest tightness and it's usually relieved by just folding my arms inward. I've also had an ongoing cough now for awhile (which I suspect could be gastral related right?) One night it was just out I remember it lasting for about 1 hour - 2 hours - very uncomfortable. Moving around seemed to make it subside. In any case, these symptoms seemed to continue so I went to the ER they did an EKG nothing with my heart, and I described the symptoms. Nothing appears wrong with my lungs ethier I can breath in and out fine no problem. The doctor said it's GERD take some Pepcid and see what happens. So I decided to modify my diet a little and not take the Pepcid but symptoms still persisted. I started on Tagment instead about week ago and I honestly feel things have gotten better (asside from this horrible sinus infection). In any case stomach symptoms seem to be lessened however I noticed that lets say I do some physical activity I right away feel this chest tightness and I start belching, I get a little lightheaded too, sweat maybe a little too and symptoms subside slowly after. It could be as little as me playing around throwing some kicks or punches. This has me worried. I also know I get nervous alot too which escaltes problems, and I'm getting over a bad cold/sinus infection. Any thoughts? Bare in mind in general since taking the Tagment symptoms seems to have subsided.
Im 24, was running the mile in like 7 min 20 sec's - not even in the best shape back in like sept, now i get winded easily - seems like ethier im out of shape now, or something is wrong or both.

What are the symptoms of an stomach ulcer?
For a few years I have this burning pain in my upper abdomen just below my breast.Sometimes it is all the way across and sometimes it is just on the left side right below the ribs.I have had c scan, light ran down my throat,up the other way, with nothing found except acid reflux and a colon polyp.I have very bad acid indigestion at times worse then others.I went to the emergency room after I could not take the pain another day and he said it was ulcers. No test at all he did not even touch me,just told me it was ulcers.Never been told before by any other Dr. That I had any ulcers. But he says ulcers after seeing me for three minutes.Gave me some green stuff which helped some, but I still get this irritating burning pain and stomach bloating.Has anyone with ulcers have this same burning pain.
As I have said I have seen my Dr and had several test run.I still do not know for sure what this burning pain could be.In fact I have told three Dr about this and none have told me anything I can rely on since I am still wondering what it could be...This question is for anyone that has stomach ulcers and if they would tell me how one feels.
Yes when I did smoke seems when the pain was really bad but have now quit, three weeks now without a smoke. At times I thought it could be my lungs hurting from the smoke.I just dont no.I dont throw up or have any nausea.Just the burning and bloating.
Well I dont think I am dieing or I would be gone by now as I have suffered with this for several years now.And I am sure it is real.I usually dont go around and make up pain. The real thing is bad enough without making it up.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, I had an ulcer for a long time. Mine was where the stomach emptied into the dueldenal (sp) the little curve at the base of your stomach before it goes into the small intestine.
I also had a tremedous time with Acid-Reflux that inflamed my esophagus so much it hurt me to even eat a cold peach. I went through all the test you did, and at the time was prescribed "propulsid". I think it is off the market now. Tagamet was the miricle drug back when, but with a blood test I found out that I had H-Pilori, which about 90% of the population has. This one Dr.discovered this but it took the medical profession to fess up to the fact that H-Pilori was the cause. I was placed on an anti-biotic, with another drug, plus Zantac, and some "galvascone" anti-acid and was healed in about thirty days. I almost had to sleep standing up for a time as the reflux was unbearable. But the worse thing about acid reflux is the irritation of the esophagus. Asking for cancer when this happens without control..

Why is my stomach always bloated?
I had suffered from a bloated stomach symptom for pretty much all of my teens. I went to my doctor about it, its not IBS, i wasn't intolerant to wheat or gluten, they could never explain why. They told me to eat less fibre, another doctor told me to eat MORE fibre; no one could work out why I kept getting a bloated tummy. It got to the stage where I was afraid to eat! Between the ages of about 17(ish) and about a month ago, it sort of went away (with the odd spell every now and again) but it has started to get really bad again. I should mention that it started when I became vegetarian at 14, and recently when I started to eat fish again. I am aware that a significant change in diet can probably cause this but I don't understand why it happens every single day! Is there something obvious i'm missing or do i just put up with it? Is there a supplement or something that I can take? I do the toilet everyday pretty much like clockwork so I don't think there's anything wrong with my bowels. Its extremely uncomfortable and its making my life really sucky!! Does anyone have any suggestions? Or should I just see my doctor again?

I drink lots of water, I dont think this is the problem, but thank you.

    • ANSWER:
You are not getting enough water. You are bloated from eating too much sodium and not drinking enough pure H2O.

Please help with my stomach symptoms!?
So for the past month and a half to two months i've been on and off (mostly on, especially lately) being sick. My symptoms are; diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach, feeling bloated or full, and bad BAD cramps on my lower right side and sometimes my left whole side and pains in the middle of my stomach. I eat a LOT less lately because i Always feel full and after i eat or drink ANYTHING, i feel an upset stomach, diarrhea and pain. PLEASE DON'T say this is just a 'Bug' because it's been going on for SO long! and i'm asking it on here because, my mom said she would schedule me a doctors appointment and then she said they would have to run tests on me! i just hope someone could give me help so that maybe i won't have to have tests done, and because i know it will cost my parents A LOT of money. PLease help if you can! THANKS

    • ANSWER:
I think a doctor visit might be appropriate because there are a lot of things this could be and a physician is really who you want ruling possibilities out.
Off the top, it sounds like classic gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) which can be worsened either when the person eats or lies down. When we eat, our stomachs produce acid to help digest the meal that was just ingested and some people produce too much, which can lead to many of the symptoms you mentioned. On the other hand, when we lie down, we no longer have gravity working on our side and the stomach contents can move around and come into contact with the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which can lead to stomach acid moving up the esophagus and can cause many of the symptoms you are describing. The easy fix for the LES condition is not to eat within a couple hours of going to bed.
I forget the percentage but a good portion of Americans have a bacteria in their stomach called H. pylori. This brings up yet another possibility of what can be causing your symptoms. For years, it was thought bacteria could not live in our stomachs because of the high acid content but within the last ten years science has discovered this H. pylori bug that in some people does nothing (they have no symptoms) and in others, it causes them to have debilitating stomach problems similar to what you describe. A simple blood test can tell if you have it or not.
My advice would be to get some over the counter stomach medicine such as Zantac, Pepcid, Prilosec and begin taking it daily. Make a doctors appointment and be sure and let the doctor know which one you took and tell them how your symptoms have changed/not changed/ gotten worse while taking it. The reason this is important is because most physicians will prescribe one of these medicines if you go to your appointment complaining of stomach problems. Hopefully it works, but if it doesn't, the doctor can step up your treatment to the next level and not waste your time/money with something you already tried and did not work.
The doses for the above mentioned medications (you only need one) are:
Zantac (ranitidine) 75mg twice a day, or
Pepcid (famotidine) 20mg twice a day, or
Prilosec (omeprazole) 20mg once a day

    Stomach Bloating, Odd digestive/immune symptoms?
For almost 3-4 weeks now, i've had these persistent digestive/bloating problems along with a few other ailments that are really starting to annoy me. It started as bad cramping/constipation that seemed to go away. It turned into almost too much bowel movement (not diarrhea, just loose stools all the time, some with small coffee ground looking material in it). Now, the past week or so, every time i eat a meal (small, big, it doesn't matter the portion) moy lower abdomen/stomach bloats and swells to a HUGE size for about 3-4 hours after eating. Sometimes it's so bad i can barely move, i'll just have to lay down to alleviate pain. I've switched up my diet a bit to see if that helped, adn it seems like this persists with whatever i eat. For some reason i've noticed weight loss all around (except for when my stomach bloats), dry itchy skin, and it seems like i'm urinating all of the time and i'm extremely thirsty. I've been mostly healthy my whole life, have had pretty good eating habits, and have never felt this miserable for such a long amount of time. Does anyone have the slightest hint as to what this might be? It's driving me nutssss

    • ANSWER:
You may have an allergy to something. Could be dairy, eggs, nuts, could also have developed irritable bowel syndrome. Something in your system could be struggling for some reason..are you eatng healthily? Make sure you eat plenty of vegies and well balanced meals...after too long of junk your system can struggle to cope with all the processed food. There could be other reasons as well that are more serious. Go to the doctor.

could i have food poisoning? or bloating?
im not really sure what the difference is between the two, but here are my symptoms
    stomach bloating
stomach aches (not very painful, more like a hungry feeling w/ that feeling of too much air in it)
abdominal pains (also not very painful)
    heavy stomach
    back aches
    excessive burping
and diarrhea (not like the diarrhea where all you can poop is liquid)
    and heavy stomach

well that seem's to be it, what do you think it is? HELP

    • ANSWER:
Bloating. If it was food poisoning your body would be trying to get rid of the "poison" and you would be throwing up.

bloated stomach and other symptoms? please answer.?
the past 2 months Ive noticed ive been very bloated after everything I eat, to the extent that my mother has commented saying I look 5 months pregnant. Ive had extra stomach acid, been emotional and been experiencing digestion problems (Im not going to the toilet every day).
also ive had a very light period this month, I didnt even need to use a tampon, it was followed on by DARK brown discharge, Ive felt very tired and also there have been times where I bend over to pick something up and I get a sharp pain in the bottom of my back.
Ive no idea if all this is related but what do you think is going on?
also, I drink water every single day so its not because Im not drinking enough or anything.

    • ANSWER:
Go to the doctor and make sure you are not pregnant, then once thats ruled out and if your not pregnant ask for an ultrasound to see if you have an ovarian cyst. I had one and i had the exact same symptoms as you, and just before i had it removed i could barely eat anything without getting so bloated i could barely move! My parents thought that I was pregnant and so did the doctor i saw and even after she did a pregnancy test she still wasnt convinced and did an ultrasound where they could see if they could hear a heart beat.. and they couldnt so then she believed me!
My cyst was actually the size of about at 38 week old pregnancy and was pushing all my organs up, hence the bloated feeling i got.
Make sure you get it checked out because they can be serious!
      Good Luck

    stomach bloating and burping?
now i am confused that i don't know where it burps and bloats, is it in the stomach or large whatever intestines. I had done the endoscope the other way round but nothing was found, only some minor ulcers in the rectum but this thing is still there. Now i am thinking of taking another endoscope through the mouth to the stomach. I also want to ask like if the problem is the stomach, what symptoms can i experience? i don't vommit and this problem has been there for a year now and had tried so many tests like sonars and took many medications but nothing changing it. Your stomach has the acid that may cause you to burp, so go back to school, don't stay quited

    PMS symptoms? Bloating and swelling?
About a week or so before my period, I get a really bloated stomach, and something else that I find really strange. My entire body actually swells up a bit... is it possible that before you get your period to retain water or something? because its not like a gained weight just right before my period and then lose it immediately after. I notice a bit of a difference in my thighs.... I just find that odd, and would like to know why... Also my boobs get almost a cup size bigger, and then after my period end they definitely become a bit smaller (I really notice a difference there). Again, why is that?

I would also like to know what can I do to diminish these PMS symptoms, especially the bloated stomach, and the swelling boobs because they become really sore before I get my period and it is really uncomfortable.

    (and serious answers please)

    • ANSWER:
This is completely normal. Many women retain water before and during their periods.

There are some medicines like Midol and Pamprin that will relieve all the symptoms of a period: cramps, bloating, fatigue, etc. But if it's primarily the bloating that bothers you, you can take a diuretic. There are plenty available over the counter.

It sounds strange, but drink more water when you're PMSing. The extra water your body takes in will actually help you shed the bloat. It actually works!!

Could I be pregnant with all the symptoms and having a bloated stomach with feelings of fullness after a meal?
I've been feeling bloated and feelings of fulness after eating a small portion of a meal. I feel warm like a fever is coming on. I believe i've experienced an implantation bleeding as well which was not my regular period. i've felt nausea and accute smells of different aromas around me. I think I could be 4 weeks pregnant but not sure. I had an etopic pregnancy 2 years ago. At the time i was only 43 yrs old. Now im 2 yrs older. But it seems I have all the signs of being prego. I've done a home pregnancy test twice a few days apart of each other and both times came out negative but the second test showed a slight blue spots in the control window. So i'm very confused. Can anyone help me with these symptoms: swollen stomach, hips and neck?
I lost 12 pounds in a month and looked scarily thin, so I began over eating to try and put the pounds back on. I'm now eating normally, but the bloating/swollen stomach hasn't gone down. My stomach is sore to touch, as is my neck, hips and under my arms, which are also swollen. I've had slight shortness of breath and nausea...I also haven't had a period since April. (I'm not sexually active).

Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with me, or how to get my embarrassingly swollen stomach to go away?

Thanks, any help greatly appreciated :)

    Are these early pregnancy symptoms?
    Hi ladies,

I had spotting from 28th April-8th May, then a full flow started so this month i counted the first day of my period as 8th May. That means i was due to ovulate around 21st May. I have not yet received one positive OPK test since i began testing on monday. This has lead me to believe that i may have ovulated earlier than i thought and that the day the spotting started on 28th April was day one of my cycle.

Il just list the so called signs iv been having.

    Bleeding gums
Runny nose with no other cold symptoms
    Bloated stomach
    Headaches everyday since monday
Felt nauseous on Sunday for about an 1hr
Had diarrhoea on Tuesday then was constipated wed-now (tmi)
    Sore lower back pains
Niggle pains every now and again in bbs
EWCM on Tuesday but dry since thursday
Feel like need to pee, like a full bladder but nothing comes out
The only way i can describe the discomfort in my lower stomach is as if i was doing 100 sit-ups, feel stiff
    Very gassy
May be irrelevant but also today in work, i sit the way i normally sit with legs crossed, but my leg kept going dead and cramping, which never happens.
Regular twinges in stomach, not sore just annoying

I took a hpt this morning but BFN, although i did appear to have a faint line in the OPK i also test.

Does this mean anything to you, and did you experience any or some of these before you got your BFP??

    Lots of baby Dust xxxx

its not an option because i live in a very very narrow minded society
cestmoi i dont live in america
i wish i were like you cestmoi...again im not in america
im from india to be about that cestmoi

    • ANSWER:
Calm down. The chance of you being pregnant is VERY low. Even so, you're so stressed out about this that I don't think you should be putting yourself in this position in the near future. It's obviously upsetting you a lot.

Anyway, I've heard of people getting pregnancy symptoms from being stressed out over thinking they were pregnant. It happens all the time. All you need to do is chill out, relax, and try not to think about it. Let it go for a few more days and see if you start your period. I'm sure that you're late just because of stress.

If you still haven't started your period in another week or two, I think you should tell your significant other. Ask him to see if there's anyway for him to get some type of pregnancy test, or ask him what he thinks you should do. I don't know much about the society you're in so I can't help out in that area.

I have a stomach virus with no vomiting?
For the past 4 days, I've been having relatively mild stomach related symptoms. I'm not vomiting, but I've been feeling queasy, mostly after the day goes on and I begin to get tired. When the symptoms first started occurring, they were mostly in my stomach - I felt bloated and kept burping. Now they seem to have traveled downwards into my intestines and my stools are watery but not constant. I don't have much of an appetite. Is it possible to have a stomach virus with no fever, vomiting and only mild diarrhea?

Special Case: Streak of blood in discharge after urination + Abnormal stomach symptoms?
I got into a drunk driving accident (Shame on me) And only a mere day late, I started my period the next day in the hospital. Just some bumps n bruises nothin real serious. The period lasted about 6 days which is a little longer than normal but whatever. It ended then about a week later I started having really strange cramps for about a week. (The feeling of a misscarriage) but mostly when id lay down. Lot of bloating. Light spotting after that for a few days. Then next month my period starts and is over within 3 days. then just a spot. then heavier. then a spot then heavier. (day by day) I know my bodies always changing i just fear it may have to do with the accident.

*I am NOT sexually active OR on birth control OR pregnant*

Now, smack dab in the middle of my menstrual cycles here i am all bloated again, much more than i am when i get my period. with misscarriage-like pain while laying-torn muscle when bending. And this month theres a streak of blood in my discharge after urination, then more milky bloodstained discharge. And this has occured for about 4 days now.

I know I'm not the only one to get in an accident then abnormal stuff happen to this region of their body.
I'm just curious and hope someone may have some insight to my situation.

I'm broke and have no way of getting in to see a doctor so plleeeeease help my with any ideas you have.

Stomach symptoms, but what could it be?
I've been feeling really sick for about a week. I usually don't catch stomach bugs, and that might be what I have, but I'm wondering if it can be anything else. Here are the symptoms:
    Upset stomach
    Increase in gas (big time)
Increased appetite (but nothing sounds good)
And when it started, I was sleeping and I woke up moaning in pain. My stomach cramped so badly it made me wake up. Then I felt really nauseous. I went to the bathroom, to see if I'd throw up, but I didn't. Then I laid back down and continued to feel nauseous.

I have been so hungry lately that if I don't eat I feel really sick (crampy, bloated, nauseous). I have to keep myself full or I get really sick.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance

I have been so hungry lately that if I don't eat I feel really sick (crampy, bloated, nauseous). I have to keep myself full or I get really sick.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance

    Stomach flu or hiv symptoms?
I think I might of had the stomach flu, but worried it might be hiv. One night I had some Ice cream and some food and in the middle of the night while sleeping threw up a little in my mouth, which I found odd. 2 days later I started losing appetite of food, then the day after my stomach and chest hurt like hell, I felt like I was dieing, then I threw up two times in a row in the bathroom after work and just had stomach pains. I had pains in my body, and I was always tired and nauseous I had burning in the center of my chest and had an acidic taste in my mouth, so I took tums and milk of magnesia. My stomach was really bloated too. I did not have diareaha until like day 3-4 and it was barley any poop even after I started to eat a little more food. The poop was greyish yellow. I havent thrown up since the second day and today is day 6 or 7 of the stomach virus symptoms. Now I just have gas and a little weird feeling in my stomach, tingling in my throat, and a headache here and there, I have my appetite back and a lot more energy, and the poop is almost turning into solid, and has gotten the brown back in it. My stomach has ben gurgling off and on since the symptoms started.

I have NOT had skin rashes, severe throat pain, or fever, which makes me believe that I might not have hiv. I have scheduled a std screening, but the doctor told me to wait a week or so, so I have it at the 3 month period from my last screening.

I work for a company where I clear drains in houses, and I think if I got the stomach virus that way.

So my question is , do you think I have the stomach virus, or hiv? How much pain would the early symptoms of hiv be? How long will the stomach virus last?

what are some symptoms of a stomach tumor in cats?
We brought our cat to the vet a week ago because he stomach was REALLY bloated. The vet said she couldn't see a tumor but guessed that's what it was because of the bloating. (the cat is 16, by the way). Well we were devastated but accepted the what was wrong. Well a week later, her stomach is going down. Not completely, but a whole lot. She's been eating more, also. She was constipated last week, but since she's been pooping and peeing a lot more We've noticed the stomach is depleting.

I've searched for symptoms of stomach tumors in cats and my cat has none of them. She has more symptoms of being constipated. She hasn't thrown up in months and her stool is normal colored. So does anyone know what could be wrong?

    • ANSWER:
      Dear Jess,

I am not a vet or tech, however I had the most marvelous cat years ago who was diagnosed with a stomach tumor. I noticed she had some blood in her stool and she had lost some weight, she was also 15 years old. She just didn't look right. Her fur had lost it's sheen and when she looked at us it was as if she was trying to tell us something. When I took her to the vet the x-rays showed a tumor attached to her stomach, the vet gave her 4 weeks. Of course Me-Tu proved him wrong and passed away 8 weeks later at home with her family. What a great friend she was.

My sister also had a cat that passed away due to a tumor on his stomach. Booder's symptoms were a little different though. He very quickly lost alot of weight (he was part Main Coon) and became cold to the touch, he would jump in your lap and when you cuddled him he actually felt cool. My father took him to the vet and she felt his stomach and detected the lump. She gave him an injection for pain and a matter of seconds later he passed away. Booder was 10 years old.

So Jess, each cat is different in their symptoms. Did your vet take an x-ray and confirm a growth? You may want a second opinion. Like I said I am not a vet or tech, but the bloating and changing size of her stomach sounds more on an intestine or bowel problem, granted there could still be a tumor but I would get a second opinion. Sixteen is a "yoda" cat. Mine are 18 today and the baby will be 16 in August. I'll keep good thoughts for your best friend.

What are these stomach symptoms a sign of?
For the past few months I've been losing weight unintentionally. Alot of times after I eat, I get nauseous and throw up. I get bloated and very full after eating, even small amounts. I sometimes have diarrhea or other times I am constipated. I noticed lately that a white filmy mucus comes out with my stool. I get gas and pressure and fullness in my upper stomach. I also feel like alot hungrier than normal.

I was tested for gallbladder issues, but it was normal. I'm now on Nexium which is helping a little bit, but the problems are still strong enough to bother me alot. Any ideas?
I have seen a doctor. I was just put on Nexium is all though.
No pregnancy - this has been happening since May and my periods are regular.

    • ANSWER:
I would go to another doctor immediately and get a second opinion. Those sound like symptoms of Stomach Cancer and if it is stomach cancer it should be treated IMMEDIATELY. You can see if you can get an endoscopy and have the doctor check it out.

I think my grandad has stomach cancer!?
I live in the UK, so the health system is a bit different over here.

My grandad has been ill for quite a while now, and is getting worse. Basically he has abdominal pain, in and around his abdomen but also lower down, has problems going to the toilet, bloating etc. He can't even sleep - he rings at 2.30am sometimes because he's in so much pain.

He went to the doctor almost every day, early in 2009. The doctor didn't think anything was wrong with him, and he eventually was banned from that particular doctor's surgery, because he attended so often.

Middle/Late 2009 he started going to a different doctor, who also told him that nothing was wrong. He diagnosed him with arthritis, and also an inflamed eosphogas... now you can understand why i'm a bit suspicious because they keep diagnosing different things.

Anyway my grandad went back and basically pressured the doctor to send him for an endoscopy, so the doctor said he didn't think it was necessary but that my grandad would be put on the NHS waiting list, however the NHS waiting list means he would have to wait 3 wks to have the operation. Which when somebody is in constant pain, is a very long time. So my grandad is having the endoscopy done on tuesday, privately [not the NHS].

    His symptoms are...
    - stomach bloating.
    - abdominal pain / pain lower down / pain in chest
    - difficulty breathing.
    - constant pain basically.

Do you think my grandad may have stomach cancer?
btw he hasn't vomited, or felt nauseous. So this is a good sign, right?

    He's 76
Kelle yes i understand what you are saying. My grandad is in constant pain and the doctors think that nothing is wrong. So yes I don't think it will 'satisfy' me if they don't find anything. There must be something causing his pain.

    • ANSWER:
This could be so many things - from acid reflux, gastritis, diverticulitis, constipation to the more serious which would be cancer. Since this has been going on for some time and he hasn't been losing a lot of weight, we will hope there will be no cancer diagnosis but something that can be treated with medication. He needs to make sure he is not passing hard stools daily - if he is, he needs to change his diet or start a fiber-type product such as Miralax or Citrucel, etc to keep him regular and the stools soft. He should also be taking some tylenol regularly for any pain he is having. A CT scan could probably have gotten him a diagnosis earlier but, you have to deal with the medical system that you have there. Hopefully, Tuesday, he will have a proper diagnosis and then can be started on some sort of treatment to alleviate this problem. You can go to and type in all of the above terms and read up on each one for more information.

Bloated stomach, pain around ovary - what's wrong?
    Here are my symptoms:
    - very bloated stomach
    - abdominal pain and sometimes cramps
    - right pelvic pain
    - pain when pressure is applied to the upper abdomen (though this could be stress attributed)
    - constant lower-mid back pain, at times burning
    - occasionally upper back pain
    - stabbing pain around the area of my right ovary, a few times last month, and very often this past week

When I wake up in the mornings, I only have abdominal discomfort, then everything else starts afterwards. My period ended last week, and I had a urinary tract infection about 5 weeks ago, which I left untreated for 5 days, and only treated with Cranberry tablets. I believe I am ovulating now, as I have the cervic clear sticky fluid thingy. My periods are rather irregular, and I often get incredibly bad back pain when I have PMS.

Is there something wrong with me? I have not experienced this sort of pain before.

    • ANSWER:
I really don't have too much to offer you as far as "knowledge" but...

I would say go to a doctor, and if you don't get the satisfaction you are looking for see another one for backup.

Maybe try some breathing/relaxation exercises or take a relaxing bath with some Aveeno or something like that.

The advice I think I read that someone gave you about taking Motrin sounded good. Just be sure not to take it with any medications that might make your stomach feel sick. I know this because about two weeks ago I took some Motrin with Excedrin because I was feeling horrible, and I felt really sick to my stomach.

I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian disease a long time ago. I remember being put on the pill for a while which helped. It is not "serious" per se...I have had worse conditions in my life, but it can be painful, annoying, upsetting, etc.

      Good luck to you =)

What can cause this disease in horses and mules (life-threatening)?

      GMS has good advice...

15 year old cat has a bloated stomach..could constipation be causing this?
We initially brought her to the vet two weeks ago because she's been acting weird. She's been jumping on furniture she never has before and doing whatever she wants. She doesn't eat, drink or go to the bathroom unless she's brought there by us. If we do bring her the food or water she eats and drinks soo much, like her normal self. Her stomach has gotten really big in the past week or so and she hasn't been pooping. If we don't bring her to the bathroom she sometimes goes in the room she's in - I have heard this is a symptom of constipation. We brought her to the vet today and the vet said she thinks she has stomach cancer but doesn't see a tumor because there's too much water in her stomach. Even after they took the water out she didn't see a tumor, though. I looked up the symptoms for stomach cancer and she doesn't seem to have any of them.. She has more symptoms of the constipation.

Does anyone else know what it could be?
    Thanks for any responses

    Bursting Bloating Stomach SICK HELP!!!?
    Hi guys

I'm 3 weeks late for period and i've had no real preg symptoms - done 2 HPT both negative.

However my stomach has been bloating on and off and i've been feeling sick on and off, not really been fussed about eating anything.
Period pains and sensation of period starting - but only cm.

NOW, all of a sudden at 11:30pm... my stomach is really big, and feels like its going to burst... i feel REALLY sick, well when i say REALLY sick... i absolutely hate feeling sick - i would rather ly on a bed of nails that feel sick - its the one thing i cannot stand. so i guess when i personally feel a little sick it feels like worse? if you get me... i don't know.

Anyway so i feel really sick - like 5 mins ago i was on my knees bent rent over in tears, i felt THAT sick.

So basically my question is... do you think there is any chance at all that i could be pregnant or do you think it is something else?

I will be going to doctors on monday - but just wanted to answers from you guys now.

Whilst i'm typing this i feel a bit sick but my mind is distracted from thinking about it so its not AS bad but i can still feel the sick sensation - just not as strong.

    Please Help !!

    • ANSWER:
go to the emergency room if you are this sick. You should not be bent over in pain. Besides, sometimes ectopic pregnancies don't register on home tests and if this is the cause of your pain, you need to get it taken care of now...If your fallopian tube bursts you could have a major bleed. This kind of pain is not normal.

Can anybody provide me with a list of gallbladder issue symptoms? Greatly appreciated..?
I have been experiencing the following symptoms..
Extremely bloated stomach that feels hard on the upper right side
Sharp pain that comes and goes on upper right side
    Constant nausea and sometimes vomiting
Pain after eating certain foods (high in fat, hot dogs, anything greasy)
    Mulitcolored stools (gross, i know)
Chest pain that leaves my chest sore to touch afterwards
No fever but sometimes feeling very warm to touch
Back pain between my shoulder blades mostly to the right
EXTREMELY dry skin on my upper stomach. (i don't know if that has anything to do with it.)

I have been to the ER once with this problem. Had an ultrasound that came back negative for gall stones and was referred to GI dr. Had upper endoscopy and found small hiatal hernia. I am awaiting another dr to set up hida scan but the attacks have been getting much worse and more frequent.

Is there anything they can do for me at the hospital without the hida scan? I am just looking for a list of symptoms from somebody who has experienced gallbladder disease or family members who have. I appreciate it so much. I am so helpless and hopeless... I can't eat a lot and feel malnourished because I am restricted to what I can eat.

Thank you so much for anybody who takes the time to respond.

    Are these pregnancy symptoms?
I'm about to go to the doctor to make absolutely 100% I am. But, I've been having these symptoms:
My stomach is kinda.. 'hard' I guess. I'm kind of chubby and usually I can suck it in, but now I can't.
    Abdominal pain.
Nausea and near-vomiting [like throwing up a bit in my mouth, gross I know.]
EXTREME tiredness [I got home at 4:00 from School, and I fell asleep, and didn't wake up until 9:00.]

Are any of these newly-pregnant symptoms? I'm due for my period soon. I'd be 6 weeks, exactly today, if I am.
My period is really irregular, and I just got on birth control, which my doctor said should help control it. So I'm 'due' in a bit, when I take the 'sugar pills'.

    • ANSWER:
If you just got on birth control, the pill could be causing your symptoms. I had "morning sickness" when I took the pill. These symptoms are also early pregnancy symptoms as well.
How long have you been taking birth control? You do know the pills take about a month to be effective, right? So if you have unprotected sex while your body is adjusting to the hormones, you could still get pregnant.
Have you taken a pregnancy test? I suggest you get one at the store and find out what it says.

Constant stomach pain and other symptoms...?
My little sister is 15 and she's been having constant stomach problems for a while now. We're going to the doctor as soon as we're approved for insurance or if the pain gets unbearable. Right now we're looking for temporary or long term remedies that may even solve the problem altogether.

    Some of her symptoms are:
She's been "burping the gases in her stomach" a lot
    She feels bloated
    Stomach pain
    She feels drained and tired
    She doesn't get very hungry
She had a fever about a week ago

Also, she is unable to sleep until about 1 am and therefore wakes up around noon. And this may also seem irrelevant but her periods are very irregular. She's a weight watcher so she generally avoids things like chips and sodas, she eats lots of fruit and drinks lots of water. In case you read over it, she is 15 years old.

Any suggestions or web sites would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Eliminate all wheat products. I'm almost certain that she may have Celiac's Disease. She will probably start to feel better in about 3 days if my suspicions are correct.

If that's not it, she could eliminate all dairy. Again, if she doesn't feel better in about 3 days, take her to the doctor.

    Ovarian Cancer?? Scared?
Im only 21, and i was reading womens health magazine and they had an article on ovarian cancer and i have some of the symptoms, but my symptoms have other explanations too, and i just had a general blood test in september which came back totally normal, and i had slight symptoms then

    my symptoms are:
-lower back pain (but i pick up kids too much and i sleep in weird positons)
-stomach bloating/random pain (usually at night, and im totally fine the next day with a normal sized stomach, i have a sensitive stomach, and lactose sensitive and i have been eating more dairy than usually lately)
-nausea (1-2 times a week, but it could be from anxiety)

*the stomach symptoms ive had occasionally for the past 2 years, several people in my family have stomach issues as well

no abnormal bleeding, no changes in my period cycle (i get it every 26-28 days and it last 3-4 days)
    no weight loss
i eat very healthy, no fast food, no soda, barely any cookies/desserts, no alchohal, no coffee

-my gyno appointment last year (dec 2007) came back all normal

I don't know what it could be in our environment, but everyone, including my mother, my niece, who's 2, my dog, and myself, are all having problems with gas, bloating, stomach pains, and other symptoms over the last 2 years. We're not all eating the same meals either, so I don't know what could cause these chronic illnesses.

Can stomach bloating cause an asthma attack?
Hi everyone. I have asthma and I noticed after I drank a soda pop--about an hour later, my stomach got real bloated like a balloon full of air and I had a very long and scary asthma attack with shortness of breath. I got really scared because of it. I took some Pepto Bismol and Tums. The bloating and asthma symptoms finally went away after 20 minutes or so. Do you think that the soda pop could start alot of bloating like this?

Have any of you ever experienced stomach bloating with an asthma attack before and if so what did you do? I am taking PROTONIX for heart burn, but I may need to switch to PRILOSEC the pharmacist said. The pharmacist also told me to take either MYLANTA or MALOX for instant relief from stomach gas. I will be telling my doctor about this next week when I go in for my appointment.

Do any of you know of any natural vitamins that I can take to help stop bloating or any tips at all? Do you know of any drinks or foods that I can take to help stop bloating? I am desparate for help.
I do not want to go through an asthma attack like that ever again! It was so scary to endure with the shortness of breath!

Thanks so much for you help and any links that you can post that may help me to stop this bloating.

    Sincerely yours,

Hello. I recently had sex for the first time about 3 days ago. I am not experiencing what feels like bloating, and my stomach looks bigger than usual. I know it's impossible to have pregnancy symptoms this early, but I am still overly concerned about the fact. I am also due for my period in about 2 weeks. Am I bloating because I am close to my period? Am I bloating because I had sex for the first time and this is a normal feeling? Or should I be concerned about something else? HELP!

Nausea, diarrhea, appetite loss, bloating, stomach pain for 3 months?
I am constantly bloated, have watery BMs, am ever hungry and always feel on the verge of puking.

it began about 6 months ago after having surgery- I felt naseous constantly, but I figured it was the stress of the surgery, and got used to it.

in august, I started having diarrhea. my BMs don't come any more/less often than before, but it's always diarrhea.

in september, the constant bloating and complete appetite loss began.

in October, my stomach finally became significantly painful. it starts anywhere from 15 mins to 1 hour after eating/drinking ANYTHING- 3 baby carrots, a large meal, whatever- and gradually fades. peptobismul, tums, etc never help. when I don't eat, my stomach doesn't hurt.

surprisingly, I have lost no weight through this nightmare- I even look fatter because of my bloated belly.

I saw my general practitioner, who had my blood tested for crohn's, celiac, and thyroid problems. everything was normal except for elevated igg and iga levels- indicative of celiac disease. however, after having a negative small intestine biopsy, I have been declared celiac-free.

now, my new gastroenterologist is saying that I have IBS, which I know is the go-to diagnosis when they can't figure it out.

what could this be?! I feel like no one is taking me seriously because I'm not dropping weight or having 20 BMs a day. I feel like my symptoms are being forced to fit IBS symptoms... there are subtle unexplained differences that are leaving me dissatisfied with my diagnosis (ex: constantly bloated, not just after eating; naseous; never hungry- not because I'm afraid of what food will do to me, but because my brain never reminds me to eat because I never feel hungry; etc)

I'm 17; female; 5'9"; 130 pounds; exercise 1hr 5x a week; and am generally unhealthy- my current flu is following a 3 week long cold.

if anyone has any ideas/similar experiences to share, I would be very appreciative. thank you so much!

2 Years of Digestive Symptoms, Help !!?
I have had digestive symptoms for 2 years now. They have been getting worse. I have spent soooo..... many hours trying to find out what it is. I am male in late teens. My symptoms are:

    Upset stomach
    Fatty Diarrhea
Gas (Bloating, + Other)(This is the worst symptom)!!
Stomach Pain (Mostly at Belly Button, due to gas)

    Other possible syptoms:
    Burning need to urinate
    Itchy outbreaks (Amazingly painful)
    Joint pains
    Unhealthy; skin...
    Eye problems

These symptoms have caused me to fail my year at school. I am going on a school trip very soon, and hope i can prevent it beforehand. These symptoms seem to be like 20 or more possible diseases and such. I have been going to a doctor, who took some blood tests, and i believe it was concluded its not lactose and gluten intolerance. Syptoms get worse under stress and positioning.
I tried some raw garlic to kill Gardiasis, and a little baking soda to stop GERD (acid), but it got worse.

Had nausea, bloating, constipation symptoms and now my friend has the same symptoms, help?
I felt ill on Sunday. Had nausea and vomited twice and felt very fatigued. Then the next day I wasn't feeling quite as bad, but then bloating came. My stomach looked really bloated even though I had only had one bowl of cereal all day. I hadn't had a bowel movement in almost 3 days, which is very unusual for me, because I eat very healthy and exercise regularly.

-Then surprise, surprise! The next day my roommate started complaining of the same symptoms!

-We basically narrowed it down to either a stomach virus (although viruses usually cause diarrhea, not constipation) or maybe food poisoning or intestinal parasites (we shared a tilapa meal together at a restaurant on Friday)...Please help!!

Acid reflux, bloating, Stomach pain, slight protrusion on right side?
I've been having acid reflux like symptoms off and on for the past 8-9 months I'd say. It started with the burning in the throat, and the heartburn. By February, my stomach started seeming to bloat really bad after meals. I went to see an Urgent Care doctor and they prescribed me with Prevacid, as well as trying to order some xrays, a barium swallow, etc. But I followed up with my primary doctor and she told me that I should just take the Prevacid and not worry about the xrays and such. That acid reflux is "normal" and Prevacid will help it.

And it did. Or maybe I was thinking it was.

Until I ran out of it about 3 weeks ago.

The bloat has been back with a vengeance, and today something different has been happening. My stomach/abdomen started hurting in the lower right area, coupled with gas pains. Then I noticed that my stomach seems to protrude a bit in the bottom right. Like a few inches above the belly button area.

I'm going to see my doctor tomorrow, but any ideas?

    Stomach problems? Infection?
I am a 21 year old male. Over the past 2 weeks, ive had stomach issues that seem to be getting worse. However, they are on and off. Lately they have been almost always present. My symptoms include upset stomach, bloating, nausea, lack of appetite. My stool is fine in color, and texture. And I threw up just now due to the nausea and there is no blood in my vomit. I have constant burping or the gas buildup makes me feel sick.

I have also been taking asthma medicine my entire life, and as a college student have been drinking more than normal. Probably about 6 beers/night for the past year.

can your HPT be wrong even if it's not to soon to test?
    Hi :)

I had sex 2 weeks before and on New Years. I got what I thought was a period Jan. 7th, but was far from normal and around a week early. I generally have a medium-heavy 3 day period. This time I had my period for 5 days, it was light and I thought it was done for a day than it was brown for 2 and still light but enough to notice brown.. thats not normal at all for me but surely didn't sound like implant bleeding either.
My lady app claims I should have had another a few days ago.
I've tested now 3 times because since my weird period I've been convinced I'm pregnant.. since then I've had symptoms. Back ache, discharge, had no sense of smell to a larggge sense of smell, bloated, stomach flu symptoms, cranky ect..
But the tests say no. I just took another and no.
Being this long, is it even possible now? I tried to make a doctors appointment but without a +, they're booked through March.
    Thanks in advance!!
